You should imagine you are entering the competition between Bell and Gray as another invention team, similar to Edison whose Menlo Park team succeeded in making a major improvement on Bell's invention [8]. Your goal is to design an improvement or variation on the Bell and Gray devices that you will first caveat and then try to patent. You will also have to build and demonstrate an actual device that illustrates the claims in your patent (see Exhibit 4 for a list of materials you can use and Exhibit 5 for designs made with these sorts of materials that emulate early telephonic inventions).
