The Invention of the Telephone

Criteria for Success

In order to establish that your invention is independent, you will have to demonstrate that even though you are aware of the materials in the exhibits, your invention goes significantly beyond them. In order to do this, you will have to document your processes and be ready to describe them in detail. The bolder and more innovative your approach, the less likely anyone can argue that anyone versed in the art of the time could have done the same. You need not be limited to designs like the Bell patent and Gray caveat. Exhibit 5 shows a photo phone, which is a device first developed by Bell that translated light into sound. Exhibit 5 also shows a carbon transmitter, which was the approach taken by Edison and others. We will be happy to provide you with additional information on these designs.

Exhibit 4 also contains rules and objectives that you should keep in consideration as you are designing your invention.
